General Information

Who We Are

The Unitarian Society of Ridgewood (USR) was founded in 1896 to provide a source of liberal religious practice in the northern New Jersey area.  Today, the congregation has over 400 members and friends, people who in personal philosophy are Unitarian Universalists and are seeking a liberal religious community.

The Unitarian Society of Ridgewood is a member congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and accepts the purposes and principles of the Association.

Services

Services are held in Anderson each Sunday at 9:15 and 11:00 AM from September 9th through May 11th: from May 18th through September 7th, we will have a single service at 10:00 a.m.  Each service lasts about an hour and is followed by coffee and conversation.  Childcare is available.

Religious Education

There is an active Religious Education program for children pre-K through 8th grade and special programs for high school youth.  There is experienced care for infants and children under age three during services.  Details about the childcare and educational programs can be found through the Religious Education links on this website.

Many holiday services are Family Services.  On these Sundays there are no RE classes, as children attend services with their parents.

Becoming Active in the Society

Our membership committee welcomes everyone.  Brochures on Unitarian Universalism, USR activities and committees, and other types of information are available every Sunday morning following services at the visitor’s table in the Fellowship Room.

While individuals are welcome to participate in Society life without becoming a member, joining USR is encouraged.  Each new member is recognized during a worship service and is also introduced through our biweekly newsletter.  Privileges of membership include voting in congregational meetings, being eligible to serve on the Board, and receiving various UU publications.

To learn how you can become more involved Society activities, contact our Volunteer Coordinators, Maggie Shoemaker and Inge Spungen, through the office.

Financial Overview

Seventy percent of our operating income comes from pledges from both members and friends.  The total budget of the Society is about $499,000, two-thirds of which pays the salaries of our staff with the remainder supporting our programs and buildings.
